Nikolai Fyodorovich Vatutin was a Soviet military commander, Army General and Hero of the Soviet Union. Nikolai Vatutin was born in the village of Chepukhino in the Voronezh Governorate into a poor peasant family. He was educated at a parish school and at zemstvo and commercial schools. In 1920 Vatutin joined the ranks of the Red Army, taking part in fighting against the Makhnovists and other opponents of Bolshevik rule. In 1922, during the famine, he lost his father, grandfather and brother.
During the Great Patriotic War Vatutin held leadership posts: he commanded the headquarters of the Northwestern Front, and the Voronezh, Southwestern and 1st Ukrainian fronts; he took part in planning and carrying out the Stalingrad operation. He died of wounds in 1944 and was buried in Kyiv. He was posthumously nominated for the title Hero of the Soviet Union.
