Mukhtar Mufazzalovich Sagitov — a Bashkir scholar-folklorist, Candidate of Philological Sciences (1965). He was born on August 27, 1933 in the village of Starosubkhangulovo, Burzyansky District, Bashkir ASSR. In 1963 Sagitov graduated from the Faculty of Philology of Bashkir State University and began working at the Institute of History, Language and Literature of the Bashkir Branch of the USSR Academy of Sciences. From 1970 he held the position of senior researcher in the Department of Folklore and Arts. In 1965 he defended his Candidate dissertation devoted to the epic "Babsak and Kusyak".

During his career Mukhtar Sagitov led several folklore-ethnographic expeditions across Bashkortostan. Mukhtar Mufazzalovich Sagitov tragically died on June 20, 1986 in a car accident en route to an international congress in Izmir (Turkey). He was buried in Ufa. In 1987 Sagitov was posthumously awarded the Salavat Yulaev Republican Prize.
