Mukhammat Sungatovich Magdeev was a Tatar literary scholar, writer, publicist, literary critic, lecturer and teacher. He was born on December 1, 1930 in the village of Guburchak, Arsky District of the Tatar ASSR, into the family of a rural schoolteacher, a former mullah.

Magdeev completed a seven-year school and the Arsk Pedagogical College. After college he worked for a year as a senior Pioneer leader, then from 1948 to 1950 he taught history at a village school. From 1950 to 1954 he served in the Baltic Fleet. After returning, he entered the Kazan State Pedagogical Institute, and after graduating, from 1955 to 1960 he worked as a teacher in rural schools.

In 1964 Magdeev completed postgraduate studies at Kazan State University. He defended his Candidate's dissertation on the topic “Tatar Soviet literary criticism (1917–1932)”. At the university he worked as an assistant, senior lecturer, and from 1968 as an associate professor, serving there for more than 30 years. Member of the CPSU since 1961. Mukhammat Sungatovich Magdeev passed away on June 14, 1995.
