Mikhei Nikolaevich Erbanov – a Soviet state and party figure, first secretary of the Buryat-Mongol Regional Committee of the VKP(b) of the Buryat-Mongol Republic (1928–1937). He was born in 1889 into a Buryat-Mongol peasant family. In 1903 he graduated from a parish school and entered a 3-grade city school in the town of Balagansk. In 1909 he completed surveying courses (specialty – topographer). In 1913 in Barnaul he became acquainted with the Bolsheviks. Member of the RCP(b) since 1917.  

In 1918–1919, during the period of Kolchak's rule, he was a member of the Irkutsk underground committee of the RCP(b) and an organizer of the party and movement in the Buryat-Mongol districts. As a representative of the Irkutsk provincial committee he took part in the execution in Irkutsk on 7 February 1920 of the White Guard leaders of Siberia, Admiral A. V. Kolchak, and the head of his government, V. N. Pepelyaev. In 1920–1921 he was a member of the Irkutsk gubernatorial committee of the RCP(b) and served as head of the provincial land department. From 1 November to 6 December 1921 – chairman of the revkom (revolutionary committee) of the Buryat-Mongol Autonomous Oblast. From 1 December 1922 to 1 August 1923 – chairman of the executive committee of the Buryat-Mongol Autonomous Oblast.  

In May–December 1923 – chairman of the Buryat-Mongol Revolutionary Committee. In 1923–1927 – chairman of the Council of People's Commissars of the Buryat-Mongol ASSR, and simultaneously from 1925 to 1927 – chairman of the Central Executive Committee of the Buryat-Mongol ASSR. In 1927–1929 – attended courses at the Central Committee of the VKP(b). From December 1929 to October 1937 – first secretary of the Buryat-Mongol regional committee and member of the Siberian Krai Committee of the VKP(b). He was a delegate to the 16th–17th Congresses of the VKP(b); at the 17th Congress he was elected a member of the Central Auditing Commission of the VKP(b) (1934–1937). He was elected a member of the All-Russian Central Executive Committee (VTsIK) and a member of the Central Executive Committee of the USSR. He played a decisive role in organizing and financially supporting the combined foot-and-ski trek from Ulan-Ude to Moscow. In September 1937 he was arrested in Moscow as the leader of the so-called “Pan-Mongolian, counter-revolutionary, insurgent-sabotage, wrecking organization.” On 8 February 1938 M. N. Erbanov was executed. He was rehabilitated in 1956. For his services to the Party and the people Erbanov was awarded the Orders of Lenin and the Red Banner.
