Marko Vovchok (literary pseudonym of Maria Aleksandrovna Vilinska) – a Ukrainian and Russian writer and translator. She wrote in Ukrainian, Russian, and French. Maria Aleksandrovna Vilinska was born on 10 (22) December 1833 into an impoverished noble family in the Oryol Governorate. After receiving her education she moved to Oryol, married the exiled student Afanasy Markovich and together with him moved to Ukraine.
 
In Kyiv, Chernihiv and Nemyriv she studied Ukrainian culture and language. In the late 1850s in St. Petersburg the collection "People's Tales" was published, which brought the writer fame. From 1859 to 1867 she traveled to various countries and met many notable people. Upon her return she worked at the journal "Otechestvennye Zapiski" and published her own works and translations. After being accused of plagiarism the writer spent the last years of her life in the Tver Governorate. Maria Aleksandrovna Vilinska died in Nalchik on 28 July 1907.
