Mikhail Vasilyevich Frunze

About museum

Mikhail Vasilyevich Frunze was a revolutionary, a Soviet statesman, a commander of the Red Army during the Civil War, and a military theorist. Mikhail Vasilyevich Frunze was born in Pishpek (now Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan) into the family of a military feldsher. In 1904 he graduated from the gymnasium in Verny and entered the St. Petersburg Polytechnic University, where he began to take part in revolutionary activities.

Active participation in street fighting during the December Uprising of 1905 marked the beginning of his revolutionary path. In 1909 and 1910 he was twice sentenced to death, which was commuted to exile and hard labor. Even in exile, Frunze continued his revolutionary work, led a circle, and carried out propaganda activities in Siberia. In 1917 he took part in battles against the White Guards and the junkers.

During the Civil War Frunze served as military commissar of the Ivanovo-Voznesensk region and the Yaroslavl military district. From 1919 Frunze commanded several armies that fought against A. Kolchak. In August of the same year he headed the Turkestan Front, successfully conducting a number of major operations against the Basmachi. Later, commanding the Southern Front, he won a decisive victory over Wrangel.

After the end of the Civil War Frunze held high state and military posts: he was Deputy Chairman of the Revolutionary Military Council of the USSR, People's Commissar for Military and Naval Affairs, Chief of the General Staff of the RKKA, and head of the Military Academy. In 1924–1925 he led a large-scale military reform in the USSR. In 1925 Frunze became Chairman of the Revolutionary Military Council of the USSR and People's Commissar for Military and Naval Affairs. Mikhail Vasilyevich Frunze died on October 31, 1925 in Moscow and was buried on Red Square.
