Mikhail Mikhailovich Zoshchenko

About museum

Mikhail Mikhailovich Zoshchenko was a Soviet writer, playwright, screenwriter and translator. A classic of Russian and Soviet literature. Mikhail Mikhailovich Zoshchenko was born in Saint Petersburg in 1894 into a creative family: his father was a painter and his mother an amateur actress. After finishing gymnasium in 1913, Zoshchenko enrolled in the law faculty of Petersburg University, but was soon expelled for non-payment of tuition. From a young age Zoshchenko had to work to support himself. He worked as a conductor on the railway and held a number of other jobs.

Zoshchenko's literary path began at the age of eight, when he wrote his first poems and stories. At thirteen he wrote the story "The Coat", which was based on his real family life with domestic troubles. In the 1920s–1930s Zoshchenko became one of the most popular Soviet writers. His books were published in large editions and enjoyed great success with readers. In 1946 Zoshchenko was awarded the medal "For Valiant Labour in the Great Patriotic War 1941–1945", but his career was effectively ended almost immediately. In the same year he was expelled from the Union of Soviet Writers for political reasons, and his name was banned from mention. Mikhail Mikhailovich Zoshchenko died in 1958 in Sestroretsk near Leningrad.
