About museum
Mikhail Saltykov-Shchedrin – a Russian satirical writer. He was born into an old noble family in the Tver Governorate. He received private tutoring and then studied at the Tsarskoye Selo Lyceum. After his studies he entered government service, but for his freethinking he was exiled to Vyatka. After returning from an eight-year exile he served in the ministry and in gubernatorial posts, writing and publishing sketches and short stories. Having left state service, he worked as editor of the magazine 'Sovremennik' and later 'Otechestvennye Zapiski'; during this period he published the collections 'Signs of the Times', 'Letters from the Province' and the novel 'The Golovlyov Family'. In his later years he published the collections 'Tales', 'Trifles of Life' and 'Poeshekhonskaya Old Times'. Saltykov-Shchedrin's works remain relevant and are distinguished by a subtle satire that ridicules the relationship between the people and the higher authorities.
