Kuzma Sergeevich Petrov-Vodkin was a Russian and Soviet painter, graphic artist, art theorist, playwright, writer and teacher, Honored Art Worker of the RSFSR (1930). He was born in the town of Khvalynsk in the Saratov Governorate into the family of a shoemaker. While studying at a four-grade city school, Kuzma became acquainted with two local icon painters. Impressed by their work, he began painting icons and landscapes in oil on his own. In 1893 he graduated from the school. After graduation Petrov-Vodkin moved to Moscow and enrolled in the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture, where he studied under V. A. Serov. After completing his studies in 1905, he continued his education in Paris and visited Italy and North Africa.
In 1911 he became a member of the "World of Art" association. During the Soviet period he worked actively as a graphic artist and theatrical designer, staging productions at the Pushkin Leningrad Drama Theater. Petrov-Vodkin also pursued literary work, producing short stories, novellas, plays and essays, wrote theoretical articles and taught. Kuzma Sergeevich Petrov-Vodkin passed away in Leningrad in 1939.
