Ivan Vladimirovich Zhernoklyov – an outstanding educator, public figure and local historian. He was born on February 8, 1921 in the Bryansk region into a peasant family. In 1935 he finished seven-year school and worked for two years as a shepherd on a kolkhoz. In 1937 he entered the Surazh Pedagogical School. Until October 1940 he taught in a primary school, then was drafted into the Red Army. From December 1940 he served in Leningrad and took part in the fighting from the first day of the war. He survived the Siege of Leningrad and was severely concussed twice. In February 1942 he was evacuated along the Road of Life to Kirov for treatment. After recovery he served in the 71st Reserve Rifle Regiment. He celebrated Victory Day in Bobruisk, where he married Ekaterina Ivanovna Frolova.
In 1947 the Zhernoklyov family moved to the stanitsa Tulskaya. Until 1951 Ivan Vladimirovich worked as secretary of the Tulsky RK of the Komsomol. In November 1951 he became a history teacher at the Tulskaya secondary school, where he worked until his retirement in 1980. Together with his wife he organized school hikes around their native region, including trips to the mountains and the Black Sea. He was awarded the Order of the Patriotic War, 1st Class, the Medal "For the Defence of Leningrad", the Medal "For Valiant Labour" and many other awards. In 1968 he was granted the honorary title "Honored School Teacher of the RSFSR".
Ivan Vladimirovich devoted himself to researching the history of his native district. He studied the archives of Maykop and Krasnodar, spoke with long-time residents, collected rare photographs and corresponded with participants of the Civil War, partisans and soldiers of the 23rd Border Regiment who liberated the district from the Nazi invaders. He published hundreds of articles and essays in district and regional newspapers, and also wrote the books "Maykop District", "Our Land in History Lessons", "Tulsky Settlement", "Mountains on Fire", "Troubled Paths", "We Must Not Forget This" and others. In October 1988 he was awarded the title "Honorary Citizen of Maykop District". Together with Ekaterina Ivanovna he created a local history museum, collecting and preserving unique historical, natural and ethnographic materials. Ivan Vladimirovich Zhernoklyov passed away on August 25, 1991.
