Ivan Afanasyevich Vasiliev was a Russian Soviet writer and publicist. He was born on July 21, 1924, in the village of Verkhovinino in the Pskov region into a peasant family. At sixteen he began working as a teacher of mathematics and history at a school in the Kalinin region. During the Great Patriotic War he fought on the Kalinin Front and was severely concussed.
After his demobilization, Vasiliev worked for some time as the director of a school and a children's home in the Pskov region and graduated from the Velikiye Luki Teachers' Institute. From 1955 he worked at the district newspaper "Prizyv", then studied at the Leningrad Higher Party School. From 1963 he was a correspondent for the newspaper "Kalininskaya Pravda", and in 1968 he published his first book "Beside the Soldier".
In the late 1970s Vasiliev returned to the Pskov region. He lived for several years in Velikiye Luki, and then moved to the village of Borki. In 1986 he became a laureate of the Lenin Prize, and in 1989 he was elected a people's deputy of the USSR. Ivan Afanasyevich Vasiliev died on December 31, 1994, and was buried in Velikiye Luki next to his wife's grave.
