Ivan Stepanovich Konev – a Soviet military commander and statesman, Marshal of the Soviet Union (1944), twice Hero of the Soviet Union (1944, 1945). He was born in the village of Lodeyno in the Vologda Governorate into a peasant family.
Konev took part in World War I, and in 1918 he joined the Bolshevik Party and served in the Red Army. In 1934 he graduated from the Frunze Military Academy, then worked as a senior adviser to the Mongolian People's Army and commanded an army in the Far East.
During the Great Patriotic War Konev commanded the 19th Army. He distinguished himself in the Battle of Moscow, the Battle of Kursk and the Korsun–Shevchenkovsky operation and was awarded the rank of Marshal of the Soviet Union. After the war he served as Commander-in-Chief of the Central Group of Forces, High Commissioner in Austria, as well as Commander-in-Chief of the Ground Forces and Deputy Minister of the Armed Forces of the USSR. Ivan Stepanovich Konev died in Moscow in 1973, leaving behind the memoirs The Forty-Fifth and Notes of a Front Commander.
