Ivan Stepanovich Palantay was the first Mari composer, the founder of professional Mari music. Ivan Stepanovich was born in the village of Kokshamary. The future composer completed choirmaster courses at the Kazan Music School and then studied at the Court Singing Chapel in Petrograd. He created the first professional Mari choir and, between 1919 and 1926, wrote numerous choral works. He compiled Mari song collections "Mari Singing Textbook", "Pioneer Songs" and "Let's Sing in Chorus", and composed the choruses "Waters Flow", "Gusli" and "At Sunrise".
Ivan Stepanovich died of tuberculosis on June 11, 1926 in Moscow and was buried at Vagankovo Cemetery. In 1972 his remains were reburied in Yoshkar-Ola at the Turunovskoye Cemetery.
