Ilya Nikolaevich Ulyanov was a Russian statesman, educator, and advocate of universal, equal education for all nationalities. Actual State Councillor. Father of V. I. Lenin. Ilya Nikolaevich was born in Astrakhan. He graduated from the Astrakhan Gymnasium with a silver medal, and later graduated with honors from Kazan University and received the degree of Candidate of Mathematical Sciences.
 
From 1855 to 1863 Ilya Nikolaevich held the position of senior mathematics teacher at the Penza Noble Institute, while also directing the institute's meteorological station. In 1863, after marrying Maria Alexandrovna Blank, he moved to a similar position at the Nizhny Novgorod Male Gymnasium and combined it with teaching and educational work in other Nizhny Novgorod educational institutions.
 
In 1869 Ilya Nikolaevich was appointed inspector of public schools of the Simbirsk Governorate, and in 1874 — director of public schools of the Simbirsk Governorate. In 1877 he received the rank of Actual State Councillor (IV class of the Table of Ranks), which granted him, his wife, and all children born after the date of seniority in the rank hereditary nobility. Ilya Nikolaevich Ulyanov died in service from a cerebral hemorrhage on 24 January 1886 at the age of 54. He was buried in the cemetery of the Pokrov Monastery.
