Ilya Lvovich Selvinsky was a Russian Soviet poet, prose writer and playwright, and a theorist of verse. One of the leading representatives of the avant-garde in Russian poetry. Founder and chairman of the Literary Center of Constructivists. Ilya Selvinsky was born in Simferopol. In 1919 he entered the medical faculty of Tavrichesky (Taurida) University. In 1921 he moved to Moscow and in 1923 graduated from the Faculty of Social Sciences of Moscow State University. After university Selvinsky worked at Centrosoyuz and Soyuzpushnina, and in 1933-1934 took part in the polar expedition on the "Chelyuskin" as a correspondent for Pravda. He took part in the Great Patriotic War, and in the postwar years taught at the Maxim Gorky Literature Institute.
 
Selvinsky's literary activity began in 1915. In the 1920s he became one of the leaders of Constructivism. He achieved considerable success with the poem "Ulyalaevshchina", dedicated to the suppression of the uprising. His first book of poems, "Records", was published in 1926. Selvinsky created the dramatic trilogy "Russia", covering key historical periods of Russia: the Livonian War, the Great Northern War and the October Revolution. Ilya Lvovich Selvinsky died in Moscow on March 22, 1968, and was buried in the Novodevichy Cemetery.
