Ivan Konstantinovich Aivazovsky – a world-renowned Russian marine and battle-scene painter, collector, and patron. He was born in Feodosia into the family of an Armenian businessman. From childhood he showed talent for drawing, studied at a gymnasium in Simferopol, and later at the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts.
In 1835, for his achievements in painting, he received a silver medal and was appointed assistant to the fashionable French marine painter Philippe Tanner. In 1844 he became the painter of the Main Naval Staff of Russia, participated in naval voyages and battle operations. He created a series of paintings depicting the victories of the Russian fleet. He was awarded the Order of St. Anna, Third Class, by Emperor Nicholas I.
Aivazovsky traveled extensively, held solo exhibitions in Russia and abroad, engaged in philanthropy, and built archaeological museums in Crimea. Ivan Konstantinovich Aivazovsky died on April 19 (May 2), 1900.
