Ivan Ivanovich Golikov was a Russian and Soviet miniature painter, an Honored Art Worker of the RSFSR, and the initiator and founder of the Palekh Artel of Ancient Painting. He was born in Moscow into the family of a Palekh icon painter. In childhood he studied icon painting in the workshop of the Sofonov brothers in Palekh, then worked in icon-painting workshops in St. Petersburg and Moscow.
Golikov carried out restoration and painting of churches, and also served in the military. After World War I he worked as a theatrical artist in Shuya, Kineshma, Ivanovo-Voznesensk and Kostroma, creating sets for performances. In 1921 Golikov created his first miniature on a papier-mâché box, outlining the main features of the new art.
The pinnacle of Golikov's work is considered to be the miniatures for the illustrated edition of 'The Tale of Igor's Campaign' (1934). In 1933 he was awarded the title of Honored Art Worker of the RSFSR. Ivan Ivanovich Golikov died on March 31, 1937, after a serious illness.
