Ivan Ivanovich Fedyuninsky was a Soviet military leader, Army General, and Hero of the Soviet Union. He was born on 17 (30) July 1900 in the village of Gilyova, Uspenskaya volost, Tyumensky uyezd, Tobolsk Governorate (now Tugulymsky District, Sverdlovsk Oblast), into a peasant family. Fedyuninsky graduated from the Vladivostok Infantry School, the "Vystrel" courses, and advanced academic courses. In 1929 he took part in the conflict on the Chinese Eastern Railway (CER), and from 1931 he held positions as a battalion and regimental commander. For heroism displayed in the battles on the Khalkhin Gol River in 1939, he was awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union. During the Great Patriotic War he commanded a rifle corps and armies, served as deputy commander of fronts, and took part in key battles of the war — the Leningrad and Kursk battles — as well as in the operation to liberate Belarus and the Baltic states.
After the war Fedyuninsky continued to serve, commanding troops of various military districts, and also held the post of Deputy Commander-in-Chief of the Group of Soviet Forces in Germany. In 1955 he was awarded the rank of Army General. He was a deputy of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR and of the Supreme Soviets of the union republics. Ivan Ivanovich Fedyuninsky died in Moscow in 1977 and was buried at the Novodevichy Cemetery.
