Issa Alexandrovich Pliyev – a Soviet military commander, General of the Army, participant in the Polish Campaign of 1939, the Great Patriotic War and the Soviet–Japanese War, twice Hero of the Soviet Union (1944, 1945). Pliyev was born on 25 November 1903 in the village of Stary Batakoyurt (now North Ossetia). After finishing primary school he worked as a farmhand.
In 1922 Pliyev entered service in the Workers' and Peasants' Red Army. After a short demobilization he returned to the army and graduated from the Leningrad Military Cavalry School. His subsequent service included commanding a course at the North Caucasus Cavalry School and studying at the M. V. Frunze Military Academy. After the academy he held various command positions in the cavalry, served as an instructor in the Mongolian People's Republic, and took part in the Polish Campaign.
At the outbreak of the Great Patriotic War Pliyev was at the Military Academy of the General Staff in Moscow. He was graduated early and appointed commander of the 50th Cavalry Division. He distinguished himself in the Smolensk Battle and the Battle of Moscow by conducting successful raids into the enemy rear. After the war Pliyev continued to serve: he commanded military districts and armies in various regions of the USSR, including service in Cuba during the Cuban Missile Crisis, and held high positions in the Ministry of Defense. Throughout his military career Pliyev was a deputy of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR and a candidate member of the CPSU Central Committee. Issa Alexandrovich Pliyev died in Moscow on 6 February 1979 and was buried on the Alley of Glory in Vladikavkaz.
