Grigory Dmitrievich Yusupov – General-in-Chief of the Yusupov family, father of Prince B. G. Yusupov. As an infant Prince Yusupov was appointed stolnik by Tsar Fyodor III Alexeyevich. He was a playmate of Tsarevich Peter Alexeyevich.
During the Russo-Turkish War (1686–1700), as part of a dragoon regiment he took part in both Azov campaigns and was appointed esaul by Peter I. After the capture of Azov he took part in the tsar's ceremonial entry into Moscow. He then participated in many battles of the Great Northern War, including at Narva. From 1707 he was a major of the Preobrazhensky Leib Guard regiment; in the Battle of Lesnaya (1708) he received two wounds (to his right arm and left leg).
In 1719 Grigory Dmitrievich received the rank of major-general, and in 1722 was elevated to the Senate. Catherine I granted the prince the rank of general-poruchik. Peter II awarded Prince Yusupov the rank of lieutenant-colonel of the Preobrazhensky Leib Guard regiment and appointed him the first member of the War College. On the day of her coronation Anna Ioannovna promoted Yusupov to General-in-Chief (1730). Prince Grigory Dmitrievich Yusupov died in Moscow on 2 (13) September 1730 and was buried in the Epiphany Monastery.
