Georgy Semyonovich Shpagin – a Soviet small-arms designer. Creator of the famous PPSh submachine gun. Hero of Socialist Labour, laureate of the Stalin Prize, second class. He was born on 17 April 1897 in the village of Klyushnikovo in Vladimir Governorate, into a peasant family. In 1909 he graduated from a parish school. He worked in a carpenters' cooperative, in a merchant's shop, and at a glass factory.
During World War I, Shpagin served as an armorer on the Western Front. After the Revolution he continued to serve in the Red Army. From 1920 he worked as a locksmith at the Kovrov arms and machine-gun factory, and from 1931 as a designer. Among his designs were the large-caliber DShK heavy machine gun (together with Degtyaryov) and the PPSh submachine gun. During the Great Patriotic War he worked at the "Molot" factory in Vyatskiye Polyany. Georgy Semyonovich Shpagin died on 6 February 1952 and was buried at the Novodevichy Cemetery in Moscow.
