Gleb Maksimilianovich Krzhizhanovsky – a figure of the revolutionary movement in Russia, a Soviet state and party official, an energy scientist, an academician and Vice‑President of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR, and a man of letters. Gleb Maksimilianovich was born on 12 (24) January 1872 in Samara. After graduating from the Samara Realschule in 1889, Krzhizhanovsky entered the Saint Petersburg Technological Institute. In 1895 he took part in the establishment of the 'Union for the Struggle for the Liberation of the Working Class', an organization that preceded the RSDLP. Combining underground revolutionary activity with engineering work at enterprises in Nizhny Novgorod and Saint Petersburg, he was arrested in December 1895. After his imprisonment he was exiled to Eastern Siberia for three years.
After the October Revolution Krzhizhanovsky actively participated in the restoration of Moscow's power system. He held leadership positions in the Committee for State Constructions and Glavelectro of the Supreme Council of the National Economy (VSNKh), and led the design of the Volga Hydroelectric Station. From 1929 he was an academician of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR and served as its Vice‑President until 1939. He also held leadership roles in higher technical education and public enlightenment. Krzhizhanovsky founded and headed the Energy Institute of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR from 1930 until the end of his life. He was repeatedly elected a delegate to party congresses and a deputy of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR. Gleb Maksimilianovich Krzhizhanovsky died on 31 March 1959 in Moscow. His ashes are interred in the Kremlin Wall.
