Fedot Vasilyevich Sychkov — a Russian, Soviet painter. He was born on March 14, 1870 in the village of Kochelaevo in the Penza Governorate (now the Republic of Mordovia) into a poor peasant family. His father, a burlak (barge hauler), died young, leaving his wife and son in poverty. The family was forced to beg. Fedot studied at a three-grade zemstvo school, showed a talent for drawing from an early age and studied under the guidance of his teacher Pyotr Evdokimovich Dyumaev.
 
After school Sychkov worked in an icon-painting workshop, painted frescoes in churches and created portraits based on photographs. From 1885 to 1887 he worked in Serdobsk for the icon painters' contractor D. A. Reshetnikov. In 1892 he moved to Saint Petersburg. There he married Lidiya Ankudinova and in 1903 the couple traveled through Europe. In 1917 the couple returned to the village of Kochelaevo. He spent the last two years of his life in Saransk, where he died on August 3, 1958.
