Feodor Ivanovich Chaliapin

About museum

Feodor Ivanovich Chaliapin was a Russian operatic and chamber singer (a high bass) and director. One of the greatest artists of the international opera stage. Feodor Ivanovich Chaliapin was born in Kazan into a peasant family. From childhood he enjoyed singing, making music and reading, but the family's dire circumstances forced him to work as an apprentice to various craftsmen.

His debut on the opera stage took place in 1890 in Ufa, performing the role of the Steward in the opera 'Halka'. In 1894 Chaliapin moved to Saint Petersburg and performed in private opera. Fame and recognition came to the artist in 1896, after he was invited to the Moscow Private Russian Opera, where he performed leading roles. In 1901 Chaliapin made a triumphant tour of Europe and appeared on the stage of Milan's La Scala. His performance in the title role of the opera 'Mefistofele' made him an artist of world stature. Chaliapin also acted in films: in 1915 he played the role of Ivan the Terrible in a silent film. After the revolution Chaliapin headed the former Mariinsky Theatre and received the title People's Artist of the Republic. In 1933 he played the leading role in the film 'Don Quixote'. In 1937 the singer was diagnosed with leukemia, from which he died in Paris in 1938.
