Fyodor Akimovich Kovalenko
About museum
Fyodor Kovalenko was born in the village of Oposhnya in Ukraine into a large peasant family. After finishing a two-class school in 1881, his family moved to Krasnodar. That same year his father arranged a job for Fyodor in a merchant's grocery shop, where he gradually advanced from messenger to cashier. With the money he earned, Kovalenko began acquiring books, paintings, prints, coins, and archaeological finds, developing his interest in collecting and demonstrating innate artistic abilities. Based on his personal collection, in 1904 he established the first public art gallery in the North Caucasus. The patron's persistence led to the creation of an art school and the establishment of ties with leading Russian artists, and his activities had a significant impact on the development of Krasnodar's cultural life.
