Ensay Makarovich Ivanov – a Mari Soviet museologist, local historian, journalist, educator, public figure, and member of the Union of Journalists of the USSR. Founder and first director of the Sovetsky District Local History Museum of Mari El. Principal of the Ivansolinskaya secondary school of Kuzhenersky District, and of the Orshinskaya and Ronginskaya schools of the Sovetsky District of the Mari ASSR. Member of the CPSU. He was born on June 25, 1933 in the village of Mari-Yoshkarener, Kuzhenersky District, Mari ASSR, into a family of employees. His childhood fell on the difficult war and post-war years. In 1950 Ivanov graduated from the Kuzhenerskaya school and entered the N. K. Krupskaya Mari State Pedagogical Institute (MGPI) in the history department of the Faculty of History and Philology. After successfully graduating from the institute, he was assigned as a history teacher to one of the secondary schools in Sverdlovsk Oblast, where he taught history and geography.
In 1956 Ivanov returned to his native region for family reasons, and since then his life and career have been inextricably linked with the Republic of Mari El. From 1956 to 1961 Ensay Makarovich worked as the director of the Ivansolinskaya school in Kuzhenersky District. From 1961 to 1962 he served as deputy chairman of the Kuzhenersky district executive committee. From 1962 to 1967 he was director of the Orshinskaya school of the Sovetsky District, Mari ASSR. From 1967 to 1970 he was director of the Ronginskaya school of the Sovetsky District, Mari ASSR. While working in Ivansol and Rong he organized school museums.
From 1971 Ivanov worked for 25 years as a correspondent and deputy editor at the publishing office of the district newspaper 'For Communism' of the Sovetsky District, Mari ASSR, Mari El Republic (RME). He covered party and trade union life, ran the military-patriotic page 'Podvig' (Feat), and actively corresponded with well-known fellow countrymen — participants of the Great Patriotic War, scientists, and cultural figures. Ivanov also participated in publishing the 'Book of Memory' and 'They Defended the Motherland' of the Sovetsky District of the Mari El Republic, and created booklets for district anniversaries. Ensay Makarovich Ivanov is the author of books about the people of the Sovetsky District, Mari El Republic: 'Beloved Native Land' (1995) and 'Pride and Glory of the District' (2000). His name is included in the Mari Biographical Encyclopedia. He was an initiator and organizer, a local historian, and from 1995 the director of the Sovetsky District Local History Museum, which has borne his name since 2006. Ensay Makarovich Ivanov passed away on March 9, 2003 in the settlement of Sovetsky, Mari El Republic.
