Yevgeny Mikhailovich Dyakov
About museum
Yevgeny Mikhailovich Dyakov was a first-guild merchant of Balashov. He was a major grain trader, an animal-industry entrepreneur and landowner, and a shareholder of the Second Millers' Partnership in Balashov. In 1903 he built a unique wooden mansion on Khopyorskaya Street. Yevgeny Mikhailovich had no immediate family, but his brothers and nephews lived in Balashov.
In 1917 Dyakov was shot dead by an unknown assailant on the porch of his own house. At that time he was 58 years old. Legends about him still circulate. But during the Soviet years neither interest in him nor the architectural value of the building prevented the mansion from being transferred to various organizations. In 1983 the mansion was entered on the state register as an architectural monument of regional significance; in February 1996 a branch of the Balashov Local History Museum opened its doors to visitors here.
