Yevgeny Konstantinovich Zavoisky was a physicist, Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, an academician of the USSR Academy of Sciences, and a Hero of Socialist Labor. He was born on 28 September 1907 in Mogilev-Podolsky. In 1930 he graduated from Kazan State University and worked there until 1947.

In 1944 Zavoisky discovered the phenomenon of electron paramagnetic resonance. This discovery became one of the most important events in 20th-century physics. The scientist also authored works on nuclear physics, controlled thermonuclear fusion, and physical electronics.
 
In 1947 Zavoisky moved to KB-11 (Sarov) and took part in the development of the Soviet atomic bomb. From 1951 to 1971 he worked at the Kurchatov Institute of Atomic Energy. Zavoisky was elected a corresponding member of the USSR Academy of Sciences in 1953 and a full member in 1964. Yevgeny Konstantinovich Zavoisky died on 9 October 1976 and was buried at the Kuntsevo Cemetery in Moscow.
