About museum
Elizaveta Alexandrovna Chernyavskaya was a Soviet and Russian artist. Honored Artist of the Russian Federation. An honorary citizen of the town of Maloyaroslavets. She was born in Fergana. From early childhood she was fond of literature, mathematics, music, chess and painting. She dreamed of becoming an architect and studying in Tashkent, but her plans were disrupted by the revolution.
In 1925 Chernyavskaya began studying at the Moscow studio of P.D. Korin. However, in 1927 illness forced her to interrupt her studies and go to Austria for treatment. In Vienna Chernyavskaya entered the Academy of Arts and in 1943 received the title of academic artist. In 1945, after the liberation of Vienna by Soviet troops, Elizaveta Chernyavskaya was subjected to repression by the Soviet authorities. She was convicted and sent to the Potma camps in Mordovia for 10 years. While in places of confinement she continued to work and improve her skills. In 1955, after serving her sentence, Chernyavskaya was exiled to Krasnoyarsk Krai, where she worked at the pedagogical institute as a senior artist-laboratory assistant. Only in 1959 did she return to Moscow.
Being repressed, she could not live long in the capital and was forced in 1960 to move to Maloyaroslavets. She joined the Union of Artists of the USSR and donated a collection of her works to the town of Maloyaroslavets. She was awarded the titles “Honorary Citizen of the Town of Maloyaroslavets” and “Honored Artist of Russia”.
