Dmitry Andreyevich Furmanov was a Soviet prose writer, revolutionary, and a military and political figure. He came from a peasant family and received a philological education at Moscow University. Furmanov served in the First World War as a medical orderly and later worked as a teacher.
From 1918 Furmanov worked in party and Soviet structures and became close to Mikhail Frunze. During the Civil War Furmanov served on various fronts, including as commissar of the 25th Division under the command of Vasily Chapayev, and he also held the position of head of the political department.
After the Civil War Furmanov moved to Moscow and worked in publishing organizations as well as in the Moscow Association of Proletarian Writers. Furmanov's best-known work was the novel "Chapaev", which was adapted for film by the Vasilyev brothers in 1934 and became enormously popular in the USSR. Dmitry Andreyevich Furmanov died of meningitis in 1926 and was buried at the Novodevichy Cemetery in Moscow.
