Jaroslav Hašek – a Czech satirical writer, anarchist, playwright, feuilletonist, and journalist. Hašek was born in Prague on 30 April 1883. At thirteen he lost his father, was forced to leave gymnasium and took a job in a shop selling haberdashery and pharmacy goods. Later he managed to obtain an education and graduated from a commercial school. Hašek's youth was spent traveling around the Austro-Hungarian Empire and neighboring countries – he led a semi‑homeless life as a literary day‑laborer and a member of merry company.
Before World War I Hašek produced a vast number of short stories, sketches, and feuilletons. In 1911 the name of the Good Soldier Švejk first appeared in his stories. Hašek's principal work, the novel 'The Adventures of the Good Soldier Švejk', was written in 1921–1922. Jaroslav Hašek died on 3 January 1923 in Lipnice, Czechoslovakia.
