Alexander Petrovich Grekov was an artist-restorer. He contributed to the revival of Novgorod's fresco masterpieces, developing with his wife Valentina Borisovna Grekova a unique method for saving frescoes based on the ruined 14th-century Church of the Transfiguration of the Savior in Kovalyovo. In 1989 he was awarded the USSR State Prize in the field of culture, art, and architecture. In 1992 he was granted the title 'Honorary Citizen of Veliky Novgorod'. He passed away on April 19, 2000.
