Alexander Vasilyevich Chirkin was a Soviet sculptor, a member of the Union of Artists of the USSR. He was born in the town of Kasli and at the age of fourteen began working at the Kasli cast-iron foundry as an apprentice molder. Chirkin's artistic training took place in the city studio under the guidance of the plant's chief sculptor, Petr Anikin, and the master chaser Glukhov.
In 1949 Chirkin became a pupil of the monumental sculptor Mikhail Pavlovich Kramsky. In 1952 he graduated from the Ural School of Applied Arts in Nizhny Tagil, and a year later from the preparatory school at the Repin Leningrad Institute of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture, where he studied sculpture under V.N. Kitaygorodskaya.
In 1965 Alexander Vasilyevich was elected a member of the Union of Artists of the USSR. He worked at the Chelyabinsk branch of the Art Fund of the USSR. From 1970 until his death Chirkin served as the chief sculptor of the Kasli Metallurgical Plant. Alexander Vasilyevich Chirkin passed away in 1989.
