Alexander Mikhailovich Gerasimov – a Russian and Soviet painter, architect, sculptor, art theorist, teacher and professor. Alexander Mikhailovich Gerasimov was born on 31 July [12 August] 1881 in Kozlov. From 1903 to 1915 he studied at the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture under K. A. Korovin, A. E. Arkhipov and V. A. Serov. In 1915 he was drafted into the army and took part in World War I until 1917.
After demobilization, until 1925, Gerasimov lived and worked in Kozlov. In 1925 the artist moved to Moscow, joined the Association of Artists of Revolutionary Russia (AKhRR) and taught. In 1934 he traveled in Europe, visiting Germany, France, Italy and Turkey. From 1939 to 1954 he headed the organizing committee of the Union of Artists of the USSR. In 1943 Gerasimov was awarded the title People's Artist of the USSR and received several Stalin Prizes. After Stalin's death his standing in society deteriorated: he lost his positions, and his works disappeared from museums. In his later years the painter reduced his participation in public activities but continued his creative work. Alexander Gerasimov died on 23 July 1963 in Moscow.
