The museum's permanent art exhibition comprises two major sections: the art of Ancient Egypt, Greece, and Rome from the 21st century BCE to the 4th century CE, and Russian visual art of the 20th century. Among the most noteworthy cult objects in the Ancient Egypt section are the mummy of a noble Egyptian woman (1st half of the 1st millennium BCE), a wooden anthropoid painted sarcophagus of the shield-bearer Ankhef of the 21st Egyptian Dynasty (1085–950 BCE), canopic jars — conical vessels for storing a mummified person's internal organs — and canopic lids. In the classical section, relating to the history and culture of the ancient Greeks and Romans, are black-glazed vases and everyday pottery, lamps, decorative terracottas, various metal and other material objects, and mosaics. '20th Century. Montage' is a long-term project that brought together painting, graphic art, and applied arts by representatives of various artistic movements and groups ('Blue Rose', 'World of Art', 'Jack of Diamonds', AKhRR (Association of Artists of Revolutionary Russia), 'OST', the Union of Artists of the USSR, etc.). It is not a classical, academic history of 20th-century art but a curatorial analysis of the Russian artistic process of the twentieth century with particular emphasis on the local Ivanovo cultural situation.
