Exhibition "Mirror of the Pskov Stove"
About exhibition
In Russia the stove warms, feeds, lights, washes, dries, heals, forecasts the weather and even conjures frost. The stove, one of the main elements of the home, was often decorated and endowed with additional properties such as healing and protection from evil spirits. Visitors to the exhibition will have the opportunity to enjoy the skill of the stove-makers of the Pskov region. Guests will learn how a portrait tile depicting the English queen Elizabeth I came to appear in Pskov, examine the transformation of tiles from red-clay to polychrome, and trace the path of the Pskov tile, seeing it in all its splendor over the centuries. The exhibition presents many examples of tile art from the Pskov region of various eras and themes: mythical creatures, exotic animals, celestial constellations, a portrait of an empress, and much more. The exhibition itself is styled unusually, combining classical display with elements of skillful artistic reconstruction.
