The permanent exhibition introduces visitors to the history of the Tretyakov Gallery's creation, showing the path from the founders' idea and the small building in Tolmachi to the renowned museum of national art that brings together smaller museums in Moscow and three branches. The exhibition features archival documents, photographs, video films and installations. The history of the Tretyakov Gallery is closely connected with the country's historical, socio-political and artistic processes — the curators took this context into account by dividing the project's space into eight chronological periods: the founders' idea and the emergence of a private gallery; the reorganization of the exhibition along scientific principles; the evacuation of the museum collection during the Great Patriotic War; and so on up to the present stage.
