The exhibition reveals the complex interweaving of cultural and historical processes that took place on the Novgorod land during the transition from medieval fragmentation to a centralized state. The foundation of the display is unique monuments of spiritual culture — stone crosses from the collections of the Novgorod State Museum-Reserve. Mostly these are Novgorod pieces, shown in the museum halls in such numbers for the first time. Walking through the subchurch halls of the ancient Church of the Assumption, visitors can view these rare works of monumental sculpture from the 14th–17th centuries, their types and forms, the variety of inscriptions and ornaments applied to them, and learn about their manufacture, their existence on Novgorod land, and the functional purpose of the crosses.
