Exhibition at the Astrakhan Local History Museum
About exhibition
Astrakhan State Historical, Architectural and Art Museum-Reserve is one of the oldest provincial museums in Russia. The largest of its branches is the Local History Museum. On December 12, 1837, by the decision of Governor I. S. Timiryazev, the Gubernatorial Museum was opened. In 1862, due to lack of funds for maintenance, the museum was closed and its exhibits were transferred to other institutions. Thanks to the active efforts of the Petrovsky Society of Researchers of the Astrakhan Region, the Astrakhan Petrov Museum was officially opened on March 5, 1897. In 1911 its exhibitions were placed in the new building of the "City Institutions", where they are still housed today. The Local History Museum permanently presents the exhibitions: "The Living Past of the Earth", "Fishes of the Volga-Caspian Basin", "The Astrakhan Region in the 19th–20th Centuries", "History and Culture of the Peoples of the Astrakhan Region", "Nature of the Astrakhan Region" and "The Astrakhan Region in Antiquity", as well as special exhibitions "The Armory" and "The Gold of the Nomads".
