Exhibition 'Patterns of the North in Spoons'
About exhibition
The exhibition gives visitors the opportunity to learn about the history of northern niello through spoons made by craftsmen from Veliky Ustyug and Vologda in the 19th–20th centuries and up to the present day. The art of niello is a form of engraving on silver. The display features unique, high-quality spoons from the niello traditions of Vologda and Veliky Ustyug, whose production required significant time, given that all niello items were made by hand. Today each surviving spoon represents a historical and cultural value for present and future generations. Preserving the works of Vologda and Ustyug craftsmen of the 18th–19th centuries is not only the task of collectors and museum workers, but also of the state.
