Exhibition 'Tactile Yurt'

About exhibition

A yurt is the traditional dwelling of Mongolian peoples, including the Buryats, and serves as the nomad's universal home. The yurt concentrates the nomad's worldview — notions of space and time, the sacred and the profane, the traditional calendar, and traditional values. The tactile yurt consists of seven main parts, with the placement of items strictly fixed. The household altar is located on the northwest side. The yurt is divided into male and female sides. On the right side are kept horse harness and hunting equipment — items related to the specifics of male labor. On the left side are the kitchen items (the female side). This exhibition allows children to engage with the world of historical events and traditions while being directly within the museum space, broadening their understanding of the surrounding world and fostering patriotic feelings. Thanks to the traditional yurt interior, tactile museum objects, and guided tours, the project helps people with visual impairments gain additional knowledge about the people's traditional culture, history, and customs through tactile contact with tangible evidence. A film about Buryat traditions and culture is also shown, with sign-language interpretation and subtitles.
