Exhibition "The Icy Sea — Northern Frontiers: The History of the Defense of the Russian North"
About exhibition
The exhibition is arranged in four halls on the second floor of the northern part of the Gostiny Dvor. The themes are chronologically and territorially connected with the exploration and defense of Russia's northern frontiers, beginning in the 12th century. The overarching idea of the millennium-long history of the Russian North is the development of private and state shipbuilding—from the Pomor koch to the nuclear submarine—as well as seamanship and navigational support in the western sector of the Arctic. On display for the first time are exhibits such as models of the yacht "St. Peter" and a gunboat, specially made for this exhibition, as well as a model of a Liberty ship and a set of documents donated by the Arkhangelsk Committee of Greater Portland (Maine, USA) to the local history museum. Visitors will also see rare and unique types of weapons from different historical periods. The archaeological collection dedicated to early medieval events is being presented for the first time.
