About exhibition
The museum possesses a rich and unique collection of sculptures by Stepan Erzia (over 200 works). Among the galaxy of prominent Mordovian artists, writers, actors, scientists and musicians of the 20th century, only the sculptor Stepan Dmitrievich Nefedov-Erzia achieved worldwide renown. The master's work, formed at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, is devoted to a comprehensive analysis of human nature. The state of a person's soul—their emotions and feelings—is embodied in the exhibited works. S. D. Erzia's pieces reveal his complex creative path, his ceaseless searching, and his vivid, powerful artistic individuality. The sculptor placed the human being—its soul, thoughts and feelings—at the center of his art, prompting viewers to empathize and to marvel at the genius of nature. The high humanism, poetic quality and depth of this outstanding master's work will remain appealing for all time. The collection of the "sculptor of the world" is the crown jewel of the museum's holdings, attracting local residents, visitors to Mordovia and art lovers from around the world.
