Exhibition 'Old Rostov'
About exhibition
Visitors are presented with documents, photographs, and original materials that reveal the most interesting chapters of the city's history: the fortress of St. Demetrius of Rostov, which was built here in 1761-1763; the Don River and the Rostov port, which played a huge role in turning Rostov-on-Don in the 19th century into the economic center of the Lower Don and Azov regions. The exhibits tell how wholesale and retail trade flourished here and why Rostov was often called a 'merchant city', the 'Southern Klondike', the 'Russian Chicago', and the 'gateway to the Caucasus'. The exhibition also features extensive materials illustrating the development of medicine, education and culture in Rostov-on-Don in the late 19th - early 20th centuries.
