Exhibition 'The Beard Debate'
About exhibition
For the first time in Yaroslavl's museum space, a historical event is presented through artistic means using audiovisual and multimedia technologies. Without a guide and without labels, the exhibition engages visitors in dialogue, debate and reflection. An original museum performance unfolds before the visitor, featuring authentic works from the 18th-20th centuries, animation, music, light and sound. In the Metropolitan Chambers in the summer of 1705 a dispute took place over the beard of Dmitry of Rostov, connected to Peter the Great's decree on shaving beards. This event became a symbolic element of the project. The exhibition includes original works from the museum's collection, an animated film and video art presenting the reflections of contemporaries. In 2016 the project 'The Beard Debate' won the grant competition for museum projects 'The Changing Museum in a Changing World' (2016–2017) of the V. Potanin Charity Foundation in the 'Museum Start' category.
