Exhibition 'Socialist Realism: Meanings, Symbols, Fates'

About exhibition

The exhibition is dedicated to the reflection of the Thaw and Stagnation periods in Soviet art. It traces the complex interrelationship of personal circumstances, ideological clichés, the influence of traditions and provincial color on the development of art in the 1960s–70s. How did party control affect the work of artists? Are the subjects of the canvases workers or a new aristocracy? Why is a person considered nonexistent outside of labor? The private sphere — how does art take a break from ideology? For the first time, works by Lev Shepelev and Vitaly Tselishchev will be shown, as well as a collection of 1930s photographs depicting the construction of the Kama pulp-and-paper mill.
