Exhibition “Northern Convoys: From Sailor to Admiral”
About exhibition
On August 31, 1941, the first Allied convoy from the United Kingdom, codenamed “Dervish,” arrived in Arkhangelsk. This marked the beginning of the use of the Arctic route for Allied convoys delivering strategic supplies to the Soviet Union, which was fighting a determined battle against Nazi Germany. The exhibition’s concept is to show the contribution to victory in World War II of both the Allied powers and individual sailors, whose personal feats made possible the delivery of desperately needed cargo. The exhibits highlight the role of naval aviation in protecting convoys and rescuing seamen, as well as the work of dockworkers and ship repairers. Running through all thematic sections of the exhibition are the personal stories of sailors, dockworkers, and airmen who participated in escorting the convoys, supporting them, and unloading the ships.
