Exhibition 'Silk and Spices. A Journey to Bukhara'
About exhibition
Patterned silks, colorful clothing and the hospitable smiles of the inhabitants of the ancient city, the unique oriental charm of its streets, historic architecture, traditional ornaments and mosaics, luxurious bazaars overflowing with sweets, spices and nuts — vivid photographs will tell about contemporary life in Bukhara. The strong cultural connection between Uzbekistan and the Southern Ural has been woven over centuries. Caravan trade routes long linked the region with the states of Central Asia. To this day, our shared history enhances mutual interest in each other's artistic heritage, folk traditions and contemporary cultural trends. The photo exhibition reflects an important stage in strengthening interregional ties between Uzbekistan and the Chelyabinsk region. In 2025, a working visit of a delegation from several cultural institutions of the Southern Ural to Bukhara took place. The participants were able to attend the local folk festival 'Silk and Spices' and familiarize themselves with Uzbek traditions and contemporary art. Photographs by the well-known Chelyabinsk photographer Sergey Kolyaskin will showcase the brightest moments of this celebration. In addition to photographs, the exhibition will be complemented by items from the collections of the Historical Museum of the Southern Ural and from private collections. A traditional tubeteika with white patterned embroidery, Islamic prayer beads, camel figurines, kumgans (traditional jugs), traditional Uzbek textiles — these and other symbols of oriental refinement will be presented to visitors. 'Silk and Spices. A Journey to Bukhara' will serve as a colorful manifesto of Russia's and Uzbekistan's intention to build cultural ties based on a shared history and to create a new borderless cultural space.
