Exhibition "Masterpieces of the Tsar's Sloboda"

About exhibition

The project is being implemented as part of the celebration of the 495th anniversary of the birth of Ivan the Terrible. The exhibition will present the best items from the museum collection united by a "tsarist" theme, since Alexandrovskaya Sloboda was the palace estate of the ruling Rurik and Romanov dynasties. During Ivan the Terrible's time, the royal family not only lived in the New Town Sloboda, but the most skilled masters of manuscript arts, icon painters, goldsmiths, and embroiderers were also gathered here. The finest traditions of artistic crafts established in the tsar's workshops continued to develop in subsequent centuries. The exhibition will feature icons and parsuny (early secular portraits), book monuments of the 15th–17th centuries, including items from the personal libraries of Ivan the Terrible and Tsar Alexei Mikhailovich Romanov; examples of medieval furniture; precious tableware that belonged to the wives and children of Tsar Alexei Mikhailovich; samples of embroidery and clothing created in the Sloboda by Tsarevna Marfa Alexeyevna Romanova; and more.
