Exhibition “Sakharov Inversion”
About exhibition
The word “inversion” in the title signifies that during Academician Sakharov’s exile in Gorky his ordinary life in this apartment, despite the outward appearance of freedom, was in fact turned into a space of total surveillance. In each room of the memorial apartment visitors encounter objects that seem ordinary at first glance, but interacting with them allows for an unusual experience and a deeper sense of the exhibition’s atmosphere. The audio installation is one of the suggested visitor routes through the A. D. Sakharov Museum. The order of visiting rooms is free, which imitates the wandering of Andrei Sakharov and his wife Elena Bonner around the apartment, where each room contains the atmosphere of a prolonged, endless state of continuous surveillance, where the word is the enemy, everything that is spoken is an enemy. Be silent. Only music and mathematics. The music he and she hear is the only safe connection that requires no words.
